It is my favourite work by Shostakovich (and i like Shostakovich ALOT!). As Rostropovich said - Although it is not as startingly virtuosic as the first concerto, its profundity is second to none. In comparison with Rostropovich with the Boston Symphony (on a double disk called 'Great Works for Cello and Orchestra' - highly recommendable in every way) Kliegel's effort pales.

Shostakovich resists the tradition of wowing the audience with a cadenza, instead using the cadenza as an opportunity to create an entirely new movement that bridges the emotional energy between the deeply spiritual slow movement and the frenzied energy of the finale. It is considered among the most difficult pieces in the cello repertoire. Shostakovich cunningly builds a superbly controlled increase of tension, at the summit of which the opening pithy four-note theme returns, now on the horn, urging the rest of the orchestra to join in as the cello powerfully reinforces E flat major to conclude the concerto in a surge of almost unstoppable power.
