The Twisted Tale of Delphine LaLaurie and Her House of Horrors Over 200 years ago, a torture chamber was discovered in the attic of a wealthy socialite. Through the years, the tale of her brutality has grown and shifted, and today, it is difficult to discern fact from fiction in the story of Delphine La Laurie and her house of horrors. On April 10, 1834 Firefighters smashed through a padlocked attic door in the burning home of Creole society couple Delphine and Louis Lalaurie. The horrible discovery of chained and mutilated slaves spawned a legend that has endured for over 150 years. The Lalaurie Mansion is located at 1140 Royal Street.

The inscription on the plaque, in French, claims that Madame LaLaurie died in Paris on December 7, 1842.

Delphine LaLaurie was known for her beauty, her prominent family, and her beautiful mansion, but the wealthy New Orleans socialite was harboring dark secrets. For years, she tortured and murdered her slaves.

While not necessarily remembered as a 'serial killer', her sadistic torturing and murdering of slaves in her employment certainly classify her as one.
